The New Jerusalem

       God's Kingdom Come
        (The New Jerusalem)

I
John, know that the New Jerusalem does exist.
In my God given vision I describe of what it does consist.
An angel came and carried me away in the spirit to a mountain peak,
And showed me the New Jerusalem, descending from Heaven of God unique.
Having The Glory of God, the whole city was aglow,
Like the light of a precious stone, like jasper, clear as crystal, into astonishment I go.
The city had a great wall with twelve gates,
And at each gate an angel stands and waits.
The gates have the names of the twelve tribes of Israel written on each one.
On all four sides of the wall, each side has three gates done.
The great wall set upon twelve foundations,
And written in them, the names of the twelve apostles of The Lamb, from the Jewish Nation.
The angel that spoke to me had a golden measuring stick,
To measure the city, the gates, the wall, how tall and thick.
The city is four square, just as long as it is wide.
1,500 miles square, we measured on every side.
Then the angel and I measured the height.
We flew to the top of the city, a 1,500 mile flight.
After that trip, I said to the angel," please tell me how thick are the walls around the city",
So once again he got out his measuring stick,
And said," 216 feet of thickness is the city wall,
So I wrote down the number that the angel did call.
The wall itself was made of Jasper stone,
And the city was built of pure gold, clear as glass, with a brilliant golden tone.
With twelve types of precious stones garnishing the wall in layers,
And at each gate a giant pearl set for the barriers.
The streets of the city are pure gold, and transparent as glass.
The Lord Almighty and The Lamb are the temple, now worship will surpass.
God and The Lamb are the Lights of the city,
No need for the sun or moon, because of their glorious ability.
All the nations will walk in the Light of it,
Kings of the earth will bring their glory and honor to summit.
The gates of the city will be open all day,
Darkness by the light will forever be held at bay.
Only they that bring glory and honor to the city will enter,
Their names are written in The Lamb's Book of Life, no ungodly sinner.

The new heaven and the new earth will not be separate from each other; the earth of the saints, their glorified, bodies, will be heavenly. The old world, with all its troubles and tumults, will have passed away. There will be no sea; this aptly represents freedom from conflicting passions, temptations, troubles, changes, and alarms; from whatever can divide or interrupt the communion of saints. This new Jerusalem is the church of God in its new and perfect state, the church triumphant. Its blessedness came wholly from God, and depends on him. The presence of God with his people in heaven, will not be interrupt as it is on earth, he will dwell with them continually. All effects of former trouble shall be done away. They have often been in tears, by reason of sin, of affliction, of the calamities of the church; but no signs, no remembrance of former sorrows shall remain. Christ makes all things new. If we are willing and desirous that the gracious Redeemer should make all things new in order hearts and nature, he will make all things new in respect of our situation, till he has brought us to enjoy complete happiness. See the certainty of the promise. God gives his titles, Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, as a pledge for the full performance. Sensual and sinful pleasures are muddy and poisoned waters; and the best earthly comforts are like the scanty supplies of a cistern;when idolized, they become broken cisterns, and yield only vexation. But the joys which Christ imparts are like waters springing from a fountain, pure, refreshing, abundant, and eternal. The sanctifying consolations of the Holy Spirit prepare for heavenly happiness; they are streams which flow for us in the wilderness. The fearful durst not meet the difficulties of religion, their slavish fear came from their unbelief; but those who were so dastardly as not to dare to take up the cross of Christ, were yet so desperate as to run into abominable wickedness. The agonies and terrors of the first death will lead to the far greater terrors and agonies of eternal death.

The new Jerusalem receives extended treatment in Rev. 21-22. The ultimate state of the church, and her reward, is presented under diverse metaphors: the church is simultaneously "prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband", indeed, she is "the bride, the wife of the Lamb" (21:2, 9), and "the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God" (21:2). The holy city is perfectly symmetrical (21:16) and is constructed with materials of fabulous wealth (21:18-21, using language from Isa. 54:11). It shines with the glory of God (21:11) and has foundations named after the apostles and gates named after the twelve tribes of Israel (21:12, 14). The water of life flows from the throne of God down the middle of the main street (22:1), and on each side of the stream the tree of life bears a different crop of fruit each month. The throne of God and of the Lamb is in the city (22:3); night and tears have both been banished (21:4; 22:5). Best of all, God's servants will see his face, and that will provide all the light they need (22:4-5). The "nations" are not other than the church, since they have free access to this city that does not admit anything impure (21:24-27; 22:2); rather, the city becomes the focal point of the existence of all the redeemed in the new heaven and new earth.
